Dry, Itchy Scalp Problem?

Having a dry, itchy scalp can be a really distracting experience. Imagine talking with someone like your boss or a significant other and all you can focus on is scratching your head! They might start to think that you have lice or something, and probably do some social distancing of a couple extra feet! It’s a terrible feeling to have.

But at the same time, you don’t recall ever seeing any bugs and you use shampoo quite often. That should’ve been enough to kill off any bugs that may be dwelling in your hair right?

What May Be the Cause of the Dry, Itchy Scalp?

Your dry scalp issue may actually be due to the type of shampoo that you use. Some shampoos contain really strong chemicals that can quickly dry out the skin on your head.

Additionally, the dryness will also break through the healthy, protective skin oils on your head. This would leave your head to be more prone to skin breaks and potential exposure to all sorts of microscopic critters. This would definitely lead to itchiness!

So what can one do? You can try switching shampoos.

What Shampoo Helps with Dry Scalp?

You can try using shampoos like Neutrogena T/Gel. It is a medicated shampoo that will help with controlling the itchiness on your scalp. It is gentle enough where you can use this shampoo daily, yet powerful enough where just a one time use can help reduce symptoms for up to one week.

What is the Active Ingredient?

The active ingredient in Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo is coal tar. Yes, tar.

Coal tar, as gross as it might sound, actually has some great benefits especially for those with itchy heads. What it does is it helps reduce the inflammation that your cells go through. That inflammation, typically caused by allergens, is what stimulates the itchiness. (Click here to read about allergens).

Lastly, coal tar will also help renew your skin so that it becomes smooth again.

Because you are essentially working with tar, you will need to be a bit careful with it. Coal tar has the ability to stain clothing or even your hair (if it is lighter colored). For some people, coal tar may cause your skin to be more sensitive to light. Be sure to wash thoroughly when using the shampoo. If you notice sensitivity when you are out and about, please wear a hat. Please use sunscreen also.

If the itchiness becomes too distracting even with Neutrogena T/Gel, you can also try taking allergy medications. Click here to read about it.

If none of that seems to be helping you, it may be time to see your doctor for a referral to a dermatologist. They will provide you a much better answer.

Symptoms of a dry, itchy scalp can happen to any of us. Most of the time, it is because of the type of shampoos we use. Some may contain various chemicals that are just too strong for the sensitive cells on our head. By switching it to a brand without such strong chemicals like Neutrogena T/Gel, it can significantly reduce the itchiness.

Hope this shampoo will help you with your dry, itchy scalp symptoms! Imagine being free from all that itchiness and dryness!

  1. Hi Mike! I love your article because it is truly helpful and informative too. I will be sharing it with my daughter who has been experiencing this problem of the itchy scalp for some time now. She says a few hours after washing her hair, the scalp starts itching. I hope this shampoo helps her because it’s truly embarrassing to keep scratching your head in front of people.
    Thanks for sharing.

    • Hello there! Oh wow, what perfect timing. The shampoo she was using might be the cause of her itchy scalp. Hopefully the Neutrogena T/Gel will be a quick fix for her.

  2. I have been noticing this problem recently. And I am glad there is a quick fix. I will certainly try out this shampoo to see how it works. I also like that Neutrogena T/Gel doesn’t have those strong and dangerous chemicals that other brands have. I always pay attention to this. I don’t want to poison myself.

    • Hello there, Ann! Sorry you have been experiencing itchy, dry scalp recently. Hopefully the switch to Neutrogena T/Gel will be the solution for you. That’s good that you pay attention to the small details of various products, that’s a really good practice to have.

  3. I like your suggestion to fix this problem and have had issues myself in the past with an itchy scalp. It is so distracting and yes people do think that you have critters that they can catch so they step back. Most of my friends have had to change their shampoo to get rid of the itches. So your choice of the Neutrogena T/Gel is excellent and worth a try.

  4. This was an interesting article to read. It makes me wonder where you csn get a natural source of this these days. Back in the old days, we had loads of coal lying around here as well as many sooty faces to dig it up. But not any more. Now, youd probably need to cart it half way around the world in a bottle eh

    • Hello there, Kwidzin! I was thinking that when I was writing this post as well on where one can get a natural source of coal tar. Always interesting and fun to learn how things work or even where they come from.
